Seiko designers took profound inspiration from the slow movement of stars across the night sky. Human eyes cannot easily perceive the gradual motion of stars during the night.
However, these stars leave a lasting and beautiful trace across the dark universe. This concept perfectly mirrors the daily effort that Ohtani accumulates throughout his baseball journey.
Concept of the Watch
The innovative watch features a completely unprecedented concept in modern mechanical timekeeping history.
It accurately measures and displays an astonishing cumulative total of up to one million hours.
This remarkable duration spans a period of just over one hundred and fourteen years. No other wristwatch in the world can match this incredible time-tracking performance today.
The watch utilizes an intricate mechanical movement specifically modified for this unique display project.
Design of Seiko Star Time
Engineers developed a brand-new mechanical structure to handle the demands of this complex system. The watch dispenses with traditional hands to present time in a highly creative way.
Instead, five thickly layered rotating discs continuously display the steady accumulation of hours.
These innovative discs display cumulative time across five distinct and massive numeric ranges. They track intervals from 24 hours up to one million hours.
The innermost rotating disc also tells the wearer the current time of day. The numbers pass beneath a distinct red line on the inner crystal surface.
Because these specialized discs are thicker than normal hands, they presented major manufacturing challenges.
The engineering team cleverly adjusted the movement configuration to keep the profile as slim as possible.
A beautiful box-shaped sapphire crystal protects the intricate dial from external damage. An inner anti-reflective coating ensures excellent visibility.
The dial texture stands out because it lacks a conventional flat watch face. Instead, the overlapping circular discs create a deep, multi-dimensional texture on the front.
The color palette of the dial face evokes the mysteries of deep space.
Dramatic geometric arcs extend from the rotating discs toward the outside of the watch. These artistic lines represent the glorious trajectories of stars across the night sky.
The lines flow seamlessly onto a dark ceramic bezel surrounding the crystal glass.
Designers carefully set a brilliant diamond into each of the rotating discs. Each diamond marks the exact moment a disc completes one full rotation cycle.
There is also a sparkling diamond sitting directly at the very center of the layout. This central diamond represents the North Star, symbolizing a fixed and unwavering goal.
It expresses Ohtani’s absolute determination to pursue his professional goals.
High-Intensity titanium forms the robust case and the secure clasp of the timepiece. This material provides scratch resistance and remains lightweight.
The round case features a bold diameter of 41.8mm. The layered discs create a total thickness of 17.4mm.
Star trajectory lines also decorate the sides of this premium titanium watch case. A single stunning blue sapphire adorns the top of the winding crown.
This watch offers a solid water resistance rating of 100 meters. A comfortable black silicone strap secures the rare timepiece to the wearer’s wrist.
The star trajectory lines continue their dramatic paths directly onto this flexible strap. Seiko produced the strap in a custom length specifically tailored to fit Ohtani’s wrist perfectly.
